In the vast landscape of nonprofit organizations, each with its unique mission and vision, measuring impact becomes crucial.

Impact measurement is not only a tool for accountability, but also a catalyst for social change. By measuring your impact, you can gain insights into the needs, preferences, and behaviors of your target population, and tailor your interventions accordingly. You can also use your impact data to advocate for your cause, mobilize resources, and inspire others to join your mission.

Impact frameworks serve as guiding stars for an impact measurement strategy, helping nonprofits operationalize their plan for delivering and measuring their progress towards the positive change they intend to create in the world. However, with a plethora of frameworks available, selecting and tailoring one to your nonprofit's specific goals can be a challenging task. This guide aims to provide clarity on what to consider when defining an impact framework that aligns with your organization's mission.

Understanding the Structure of Impact Frameworks:
Impact frameworks are structured plans that outline a systematic approach for evaluating your organization's progress towards its mission and objectives. From our own DeCAL methodology to the widely recognized Theory of Change and the more specialized Social Return on Investment (SROI) model, these frameworks offer various approaches for quantifying impact.

Although every framework is a little different, they all follow a similar overarching structure that asks your organization to define who your target beneficiaries are, how your organization is intending to positively impact them, how you'll know your delivery is high quality, and how those efforts may contribute to larger, community-level impact goals.

For each of these dimensions of your impact framework you'll also outline your objectives and goals, as well as the metrics or key impact indicators (KIIs) you'll need to collect to be able to measure progress against those goals.

Start with your WHY, then Outline Goals and Objectives:
The first step is to get clear on why you're doing the work you're doing in the first place. What change do you seek to bring about? Who are your primary beneficiaries? Starting with your "Why" - your mission and vision, will help you focus in on the reasons your organization is engaged in the work you do, and who you're ultimately trying to positively impact. In the first stage of our DeCAL methodology, known as “Define,” our customers are instructed to first outline their mission, vision, and objectives, before mapping these to impact themes and Key Impact Indicators (KII). The key to developing a successful impact framework is to distinguish between understanding what you aim to achieve - the change you want to bring about (i.e. the impact you want to achieve) - and how to effectively measure that change. 

Consider Your Stakeholders:
Engage with stakeholders, including staff, board members, donors, and beneficiaries, to gain diverse perspectives on your nonprofit's impact goals how you'll deliver on them. Their insights can inform the objectives you define, as well as the key impact indicators you select to measure. This ensures that your framework will resonate with all stakeholders and capture the multifaceted nature of your organization's work.

Align with Funder Expectations:
If your nonprofit relies on external funding, consider aligning your impact framework with the expectations of funders and grantmakers. Even better, if your grantmakers have a defined impact framework, ask to review it so that you can ensure that you're capturing metrics that are valuable to both of your organizations and that will make reporting easier down the line. Aligning with funder expectations can and impact goals can also enhance your nonprofit's credibility and competitiveness in securing funding opportunities in the future.

Iterate and Adapt:
Defining an impact framework is not a one-time decision but an ongoing process of learning and adaptation (hence why we consider our DeCAL process a cyclical one). Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of your framework regularly, and be prepared to iterate and adapt as your nonprofit evolves. Embrace a culture of continuous improvement, leveraging insights from impact measurement to enhance your organization's effectiveness and relevance as you move forward.

By understanding your organization's goals, engaging with stakeholders, and evaluating compatibility, you can define a framework that serves as your North Star, guiding your journey towards creating lasting impact in the communities you serve. Remember, the journey towards social change is not linear, but with the right framework in place, your nonprofit can navigate the complexities and challenges with clarity and purpose.
